In the romantic comedy The Rewrite , Hugh Grant plays a screenwriter who won an Oscar fifteen years ago, but now is unemployed and broke. His agent arranges for him to take a job teaching screenwriting in a university in upstate New York. It's the last thing he wants to do, but he has no choice. There, he gets off to a bad start, sleeping with one of his students and insulting a tenured formidable member of his department, played by the amazing Allison Janney, by telling her he hates Jane Austen, her area of expertise (a fact made all the more funny due to Grant's prior role in the Austen classic "Sense and Sensibility"). He then meets a single mom played by Marisa Tomei who both challenges him and brings out the best in him. While it definitely has some morally questionable moments, this is a laugh-out-loud funny movie, filled with great supporting characters, and is ultimately a story of redemption. This is a lovely short animated film for anyone who loves books or libraries! It won the Oscar for the Best Short Animated Film.

The reality of my life is that I have to wait a while for movies I want to see. I see them advertised at the theater, read the reviews, decide which ones I am interested in and then wait for the DVD. Sometimes, the movie does not live up to my extended expectations. Other times, my patience is richly rewarded. Last night was one of those times. I was so excited to get to see Letters to Juliet   last night. It tells the story of a wannabe writer, Sophia, who goes off to Verona on a vacation with her fiance. He's busy scoping out suppliers for his new restaurant, so she takes advantage of the time to do some sight-seeing on her own. In doing so, she comes across a group of women called the "secretaries of Juliet" who write back to the women who leave their letters asking for love advice at Juliet's wall. She joins them, and finds a letter written 50 years earlier (it had been stuck behind a brick). On a whim, she responds to the woman who had left her one true love be...

As I hoped, I did get to watch Dear John Saturday night. It is always interesting to see how a book is adapted for the big screen. It is hard to have the same character development in a movie as in a book. The novel by Nicholas Sparks reveals a great deal more about what is going on in the main character's (John) head. Motivations are much clearer. Without that, some of the action in the movie seems a bit disjointed. Why did the characters act the way they did? It doesn't really make perfect sense  Overall, I feel that the movie was good. While not a classic, it was a good way to spend a couple of hours. They mostly stuck to the storyline in the book, with a few minor changes here and there. One definite change was the ending (which I will not reveal for anyone because I don't want to be a spoiler). I will say that I did like the ending better in the movie! Anyone who enjoys a Nicholas Sparks' story or a good romantic movie will enjoy this film.
